Uwajimaya Village combines apartments, retail, restaurants and parking, all in one unique, two-block development in
the heart of the International District in Seattle. The famous Uwajimaya Asian grocery store anchors the site, and
is surrounded by a multi-ethnic food court, a Washington Mutual Bank, several small retailers plus the Kinokuniya
Bookstore. The 176 apartments sit atop the store, surrounding a serene, landscaped courtyard. This project was the
largest new multi-family housing development ever to be built in this neighborhood, and it has been integral to the
resurgence of new development activity in the area.
Maria Barrientos, while a partner at Lorig Associates, guided this project through the initial deal making, market
and financial feasibility analysis, neighborhood acceptance, permit process, historic district approvals, financing
and design. Maria remains a partner in the project. Laura Bachman, also while at Lorig Associates, arranged the
permanent financing for the apartment portion of the project, and was actively involved in the marketing of the apartments.
